The association is in collaboration with Vitiligo Support and Awareness Foundation is advocating for the declaration of World Vitiligo Day as we comprehend the great benefits the commemoration of this disease could bring to the patients such as public awareness, zero discrimination on vitiligo patients and further researches on finding a cure for vitiligo. Our reason for pursuing this mission is motivated by the Vision 2016 pillar “A Moral and Tolerant Nation”
Vitiligo is a condition in which people lose melanin – the pigment that gives skin its color – resulting in white patches of skin. While the exact cause of vitiligo is unknown, it has been confirmed that an autoimmune component plays a strong rolle in the disease. The chronic nature of the condition, long term treatment, lack of uniform effective therapy and unpredictable cause of the condition has a significant impact upon the quality of life for individuals living with vitiligo.
Over 100 million people suffer from vitiligo as a result of the social stigma and severe psychological burden that result. They are the victim of ostracism, discrimination and many lose their homes, families and livelihoods because of this disease, yet there is no cure in sight. By focusing on collaboration and education we can make a real difference in the lives of so many, and we can get closer to finding a cure.
World Vitiligo Day is an annual day on June 25 specially dedicated to people with vitiligo. Conceived by patients for patients, World Vitiligo Day is a truly global event that aims to increase awareness of vitiligo and raise funds needed for research and education.
